Artist of the Week! Neo Soul – Erykah Badu

In my opinion, the four musical pillars of Neo-Soul, are D’Angelo, Maxwell, Jill Scott and Erykah Badu IS Neo-Soul, from her iconic hair wrap sitting as the crown on the African queen that she is, to the jazzy effortless way her voice glides dips and pours over her tracks; the sound that inspired so many artists after her, Badu defines the genre. Literally, Kedar Massenburg of Motown is credited with coining the phrase to describe the fusion of hip-hop inspired bass, Billie Holiday-esque vocals and pensive lyrics, on Badu’s first album, Baduizm. That classic set the tone for a career that would go On & On.  She was married to Andre 3000 and has been romantically linked with Common and Jay Electronica. We’ve been blessed with her music and shows now four decades. Never accepting the notion of limits, she has pushed the bounds creatively in every aspect from the iconic Window Seat video to her own “special” brand of incense (you can google it). She is as relevant in the industry today as she was in 1997 when she debuted; her Verzuz battle with Jill Scott being one of the signature pieces in the series.  We here at NeoSoul Cypher welcome you to kick back and enjoy some classic tracks from the legendary artist, not only one of the pillars, Neo-Soul’s cornerstone, Ms. Erykah Badu.
